Midsummer at Bogen, Tysfjord (June 2009) : Midsummer in Norway is called Sankthansaften and is not celebrated as extensively as in Sweden and Finland. Still I wanted to do something special so we drove down to Bogen in Tysfjord, about four hours south of Tromsø, where Stian´s grandparents has their holiday house. Probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited!

Namibia (May - July 2008) : Finally back in Africa! This time to do my thesis project for my BSc in biology, at Gobabeb Training and Research Centre. Gobabeb is located in the middle of the central Namib Desert, in a hyper-arid area just north of the Kuiseb River. I lived here for 10 weeks and climbed a lot of dunes, ate a lot of goat, had a lot of potlucks, met a lot of people that became very dear to me, and enjoyed a lot of walks around the area admiring the life of the desert in this seemingly barren land. And worked. Very hard and very much. Before Gobabeb I spent some time in Walvis Bay and afterwards some time in Swakopmund, Otjiwarongo, Waterberg Plateau Park, Outjo and Etosha National Park.

Sarawak and Sabah (Borneo) and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (February - March 2008) : A trip to Borneo is probably one of the best field trips one can do as a biology student. This tropical ecology course was a tremendous good opportunity and we consisted of a team with people from all over Sweden (plus me and another Finn :). My trip started and ended with the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, and before the course I also had a few days in Kuching, Sarawak, with some time to get to know the city and its surroundings. Kuching was also the starting point for the course and we headed out to Bako National Park with its mangrove, proboscis monkeys, pitcher plants and insidious macaques. Thereafter we flew to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah to do a few days below water snorkeling, and after that we headed for the most demaning part of the trip – climbing Mt Kinabalu. After having done the far most challenged and physically hardest thing ever so far we ended the course with one week in the deep rainforest of Danum Valley with the lovely leeches, muddy clothes, terrific knowledgeable guides and experiences I would not want to live without. Post-course consisted of Sepilok orangutang centre, Sandakan and a few days in KK. Terima kasih & jumpa lagi!

Isla Margarita, Venezuela (September 2007) : After a summer filled with long days of hard work the reward was a month at this island called the pearl of the Caribbean. The work was replaced with full-time relaxation - a proper vacation with happy people, good drinks and food, perfect weather and sweet dogs. Margarita was an excellent choice this time of the year considering we went to the Caribbean and still avoided the hurricanes that approaches further north. Nevertheless, I now know that I never will do another vacation with the daily question "the beach or...the beach?", more action please!

Bodø, Norway (June 2007) : This was a five days marine biology course that took place at the striking Atlantic coast of Norway, outside Bodø, and was a part of an ecology course at Umeå University. We did surveys on common periwinkle (Litorina litorea), examined the fauna at an estuary, did transect on a rock beach and collected marine animals by trawling. It was all wounded up with a barbeque party where we tasted all the different species we captured by the trawler!

Riga, Latvia (April 2007) : Some wonderful days was spent in this charming city with cobbled streets and medieval architecture, which was a great help for withstanding the coldest period of the spring. We strolled between Art Nouveau buildings and left-overs from Soviet days, with facial expressions in deep admiration but with our jackets tightly wrapped around us, since it was still quite cold. This quandary was cured on comfy cafés with the traditional hot Riga Balzam black currant drink, which was enjoyed with great appreciation, as was all the restaurants we tried out with influences from all over the world. A city that can easily be visited again, but then during summertime.

Cruise Helsinki-Stockholm-Helsinki (February 2007) : A spontaneous trip, Umeå-Vaasa, down by car to Helsinki, a couple of days cruise to Stockholm and back (with a few hours in Stockholm), then back to Vaasa and back home to Umeå by ferry. So much fun!

New York (July 2006) : New York. So many stories to tell, so much to see, so much to do. And yet, I didn't like it... But again I'm definitely not a city girl. I tried to stick to the greenest parts of the city; visited most of the zoos, the beach in Brooklyn, Central Park and the Museum of Natural History. And those places were awesome, very well maintained and organized, and very informative, though all the school kids running around wherever I went. Also I did enjoy the contrast in walking a few blocks and getting so different atmospheres all in one place, from China, Russia, Italy, Korea etc. I met a Russian girl outside central park who also travelled alone and we did most of (a tourist's) New York in the five days I spent there, so now I have no reason to go back. Feels great. :)

Wisconsin & U.P. of Michigan (July 2006) : Visited a friend in these beautiful surroundings, so similar to Scandinavia, but yet not. I could feel the similarities looking at some trees, water plants and the shore and understand why there are so many immigrants from Scandinavia over there. The main difference is the climate, which is much more humid and warm from here, but still with cold heavy winters. Lucky bastards! :)

Kraków, Poland (April 2006) : Picking Kraków in southern Poland as an easter travel destination turned out to be a very good choice, because of its simplicity and honest beauty. The history of the buildings of this city and everything that has happened on it’s streets and backyards gives it almost a melancholic atmosphere. Also we made a trip to Auswich-Birkenau concentration camp. Oh man, what a strong experience. But just something everyone has to do once in a life time, just to never ever forget what has happened - to prevent it from happen again. Wieliczka salt mine was also one of the destinations of this trip. After walking down numerous of stairs hundreds of meters in to a place just made of salt, you come out as a new person!

Norway (2005) : Summer of 2005 it was time for a road trip to Norway. The goal was the Norwegian city Mo i Rana, but it takes a couple of days each way to get there, so a lot of other nice places were also seen. Camping in Tärnaby in Sweden, visiting the great glacier Svartisen outside Mo i Rana, potholes at marble rocks (called marmorslottet), caving in Grønligrotta, crossing the polar circle and numerous of bare mountains and wild rivers. Norway, or the northern Scandinavia as a whole, is well worth seeing!

South Africa and some Swaziland (April - June 2004) : Three months was spent out in the bush, in the Limpopo province, northeast South Africa. And that made up my mind, this is me and this is what I was made for! But hey, who wouldn’t love it, just look at those pictures! :) Worked as a volunteer with mostly lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas. And when not working on the reserve I went to Kruger NP and Swaziland with some friends.

Spain, mostly. But also France and Portugal. (Nov 2003 - Feb 2004) : I studied Spanish for three months in one of the best cities in the world - Salamanca in the middle of Spain. It wasn’t anything about beaches, sunbathing, flamenco or piña colada, but nevertheless it was one of the best experiences in my life so far. Apart from the fact that I learnt to speak Spanish pretty good, I made some great friends for life. We partied most of the time, I guess, but we also did some great traveling not only in Spain but also to Portugal and France. (The quality of some pictures are unfortunately just BAD, since they all have been scanned.. )

Namibia (July 2003) : The Namib desert, this part of the world has a big place in my heart. The nature is so unbelievable harsh and looks so very barren, but yet there are life out there. I was an Earthwatch-volunteer with the desert dwelling elephants and giraffes for a couple of weeks in the summer of ‘03. “There is a place where boundaries are distinct and vistas stretch towards the horizon without interruption. This place needs to be seen to be fully understood” -unknown (The pictures have been scanned, and therefore the quality is unfortunately quite bad.)
